Work from the keyboard

Move between screens, step through lists and start an entry without the mouse, see every shortcut for the screen you are on, and switch single keys off.

Everything in LedgerIt that has a shortcut also has a button or a menu item, so the keyboard is a faster way to do the same things, never the only way. A shortcut's keys are shown beside its command in the command palette.

See the shortcuts for this screen

Press ? on any screen, or open the menu on your name at the foot of the sidebar and choose Keyboard shortcuts. The list shows what the keyboard does on the screen you are on: the shortcuts that work everywhere, and the ones that belong to that screen.

Go to a screen

Press G, then the key for the screen:

Try the keys
Select the keyboard, then press G and T, or C, or ?

A dot marks each key that follows G. With single-key shortcuts off, only ⌘ or Ctrl shortcuts and ? still work.

A keyboard that answers like LedgerIt. Select it and press G, then a lit key; or C, or ?. Turn single-key shortcuts off to see which keys stop.

You have a little over a second between the two keys. To find a screen by name instead, press ⌘K (Ctrl K on Windows) and type.

Switch books or accounts

Hold Ctrl and press a number, on a Mac too:

KeysWhat it does
Ctrl 1 to Ctrl 9Opens the first to ninth set of books, in the order the books switcher lists them
Ctrl Shift 1 to Ctrl Shift 9Switches to the first to ninth account signed in on this browser, in the order you signed in

Each book in the switcher, and each account in the menu on your name, shows its key beside it. On a Mac these use Ctrl, not ⌘, because ⌘ with a number switches browser tabs. On Windows and Linux some browsers keep Ctrl with a number for their own tabs.

Find a record

Try figma, 6210 or #41. Arrow keys move, Enter chooses.

The command palette, open on a journal entry. Type "figma", "6210" or "#41" to find records, or a screen's name to go there.

Press ⌘K (Ctrl K on Windows), or select the search button in the top bar, and type two or more letters. Under Records the palette lists the GL accounts, counterparties, transactions and journal entries that match, each with its code, number or date. Press Enter to open the one highlighted.

  • Type part of a name or description: "figma" finds the Figma charges, the vendor and any entry that mentions it.
  • Type a GL account's code, such as "6210".
  • Type a journal entry's number, such as "41" or "#41".

Each kind shows its five best matches, newest first for transactions and entries. For every match, open that kind's own screen and search there.

Before you type, Recently opened lists up to five records you opened from the palette in this tab. The list is kept only while the tab is open: it is never saved to the browser, and it starts again after a reload or when you switch books.

Do what the screen offers

Under On this screen the palette lists what the page you are on can do, each with its key: Edit this entry and Reverse this entry on a journal entry, Rename on a GL account. Select one, or press its key without opening the palette.

Ask about what you typed

Once you have typed something, the last row is Ask the assistant followed by your words. Select it to open the assistant beside the screen with those words in the message box. Nothing is sent until you press Enter there, so you can finish the question first.

Start a journal entry

Press C on any screen to open New journal entry.

Undo a filing

Press ⌘Z (Ctrl+Z on Windows) on any screen to take back the last transaction you filed or sent back to review, and ⌘⇧Z (Ctrl+Shift+Z) to file it again. While you are typing in a field, these keys undo your typing instead. See Undo a filing, or change it later.

Ask the assistant

Press ⌘J (Ctrl J on Windows) on any screen to open the assistant beside it, and again to close it. . opens it too. A message sent from there is about the record on screen, or the rows you ticked. The star in the top bar does the same, and on a phone Ask about this screen in the sidebar, above your name.

Step through a list

Transactions
JKXSpace
FigmaSep 12−$450.00
Amazon Web ServicesSep 3−$3,180.55
StripeSep 2+$18,240.00
GustoSep 1−$61,250.00
WeWorkSep 1−$5,400.00

Select the list, then press J.

A list that answers to the list keys. Select it, then press J and K to move, X to tick, Space to preview and Esc to close the preview.

On Transactions, Ledger, GL accounts, Counterparties, Documents and Activity:

  1. Press J to move to the next row and K to move to the one before. Once a row is highlighted, the arrow keys do the same.
  2. Press Enter to open the row.
  3. On Transactions, press X to tick the row, then file everything you ticked with File under.
  4. On Transactions, Ledger, Inbox, GL accounts, Counterparties and Activity, press Space to preview the row: the record opens in a panel beside the list, so you can read it without losing your place. Press Esc to close it, or select Go to transaction (or the record's kind, such as Go to GL account) to open the record's own page. Pointing at a row shows the same Preview button (the eye).

The preview is part of the address, so Back closes it and a reload keeps it. On a phone there is no preview: select the row to open the record.

When you file a transaction and it leaves the list, the next row is highlighted for you.

Transactions has keys of its own for a row: A to accept a suggestion, E to choose a GL account, ⌫ to exclude. See Review and file transactions.

Reports has 1 to 6 to switch between the four statements and the two aging reports. See Read and export reports.

Switch single-key shortcuts off

Shortcuts made of keys pressed on their own (C, J, G then T) never fire while you are typing in a field, or while a menu or a dialog is open. If they still get in your way, for example with speech input, switch them off:

  1. Press ? to open Keyboard shortcuts.
  2. Turn off Single-key shortcuts.

Shortcuts that use ⌘ or Ctrl, and ? itself, keep working. The setting is remembered in this browser.

Do this through the API

Everything in this guide is also an API call, for scripts and agents. The reference lists each operation with its parameters and objects.
