At rest it reads as the date, in the type of the line it sits in. Hovering draws the field's edge, and a click opens the calendar on the spot; picking a day saves it at once and rolls back if the save fails. A date that is not required can be cleared from the calendar. A person without the permission sees the date as plain text.
