Digits and Puzzle both sell accounting software that categorizes and reconciles your transactions with AI, and both publish their prices. Digits starts at $65 a month and includes bill pay, invoicing and its API on every plan. Puzzle starts at $30 a month billed monthly, adds burn and runway on its $72 Core plan, and includes revenue recognition on its $120 Complete plan.
So the choice usually comes down to two questions: do you need revenue recognition from your books today, and do you want to pay bills and run agents from the same product? This comparison uses each vendor's own pricing and product pages. Prices checked on 2026-10-13.
Digits vs Puzzle at a glance
Both are software you, or your accountant, run. Neither one closes your books for you unless you add a service: Puzzle sells one through vetted partner firms, and Digits points you to a directory of partner firms.

What Digits costs
Digits sells three plans to businesses. Every one includes the ledger, AI bookkeeping and reconciliation around the clock, bank and payroll connections, financial statements, a close checklist, vendor and customer tracking, quality checks, bill pay, invoicing, roles and permissions, mobile apps for iPhone and iPad, and the developer API and MCP.
| Digits plan | Price | Adds |
|---|---|---|
| Essentials | $65 a month | Everything above |
| Core | $100 a month | Dimensional accounting (department and location), automated schedules |
| Pro | $250 a month, coming soon | Custom reports, custom dashboards, budget vs actuals |
On Essentials and Core, custom reports and custom dashboards are available through Digits' firm partners rather than in the plan itself. Each business or location needs its own subscription, there are no setup fees, and Digits currently serves only US entities.
Automated schedules, on Core, cover fixed assets (depreciation) and prepaid expenses today. Digits' product page lists revenue recognition and accrued expenses as coming soon. Digits does not file taxes; its FAQ says you export a tax package for your preparer or use a partner firm.
What Puzzle costs
Puzzle sells four software plans. The prices below are billed monthly; yearly billing takes 20% off.
| Puzzle plan | Billed monthly | Billed yearly, a month | Adds |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | $30 | $24 | Cash and accrual books, auto-drafted statements, unlimited connections, 1 seat |
| Core | $72 | $58 | Cash, burn, runway and margin insights, revenue and spend tracking, variance analysis, custom chart of accounts, 5 seats |
| Complete | $120 | $96 | Revenue recognition, classes, departments and projects, AI reconciliations, Stripe, Ramp, Mercury and Brex integrations, unlimited seats |
| Scale | $360 | $288 | Subledgers, no transaction or integration limits, backup and restore, dedicated onboarding |
Starter and Core include 25 lifetime AI credits; Complete includes 100 a month and Scale 300. Puzzle's revenue recognition page describes a native Stripe sync that maps subscriptions, refunds and disputes to deferred revenue schedules, which an accountant reviews before they post.
Puzzle also sells work on top of the software, priced on the same page: Core plus Expert Reviewed bookkeeping at $171 a month for up to $10,000 of monthly expenses (one entity, no payroll processing, payables, receivables or inventory), a full-service close priced by monthly expenses, a $149 migration per system moved, catch-up bookkeeping from $300 per month of books, tax filing from $1,250 a year plus $250 per state, and an R&D study at 1.5% of qualified research expenses. Where Digits is the better choice
Digits plainly wins in four situations.
- You want to pay bills and send invoices from your books. Bill pay, with approvals, and invoicing are on every Digits plan, starting at $65 a month. Puzzle's pricing page does not list bill pay.
- You want agents or scripts working in the ledger. Digits includes its developer API and MCP on every plan and describes them as free and open. Its MCP can write as well as read, and entries into a locked period wait for your approval. Puzzle's MCP starts read-only, with write access as an opt-in, and is in alpha; its API is available by request.
- Departments for less. Digits Core adds department and location tracking at $100 a month. Puzzle puts classes and departments on Complete, at $120 billed monthly.
- Prepaids and depreciation on a schedule. Digits Core detects prepaid expenses and fixed assets and posts the monthly amortization and depreciation for you.
The 30-day free trial and the iPhone and iPad apps are smaller points in its favor.
Where Puzzle is the better choice
Puzzle plainly wins for a venture-backed software company that sells subscriptions.
- Revenue recognition, today. Complete, at $120 a month billed monthly or $96 billed yearly, builds deferred revenue schedules from Stripe. Digits lists revenue recognition as coming soon. If you sell annual plans paid up front, how deferred revenue works is the work you are paying for.
- The cheapest way in. Starter is $30 a month billed monthly, $24 billed yearly, and free for its first two months, with cash and accrual books. If you are unsure which basis you need, cash vs accrual accounting covers when the switch matters.
- Burn and runway in the plan. Core, at $72 a month, adds cash, burn, runway and margin insights. Digits' pricing page does not name burn or runway.
- A yearly discount. Paying for a year takes 20% off every Puzzle plan. Digits shows no annual price.
- Someone to close the books, at a published price. Puzzle sells bookkeeping and tax filing through its partners at prices on its pricing page. Digits refers you to partner firms that set their own prices.
Which should you pick
A disclosure before the verdict: we make LedgerIt, accounting software that competes with both of these products. We have described each from its own pages, and every price above was checked against those pages on 2026-10-13.
Pick Digits if you want one product for books, bills and invoices, you are building agents or internal tools on top of your ledger, or you need department tracking and prepaid schedules without paying for a higher tier. It suits a company with little or no deferred revenue, such as one that bills monthly, at least until Digits' revenue recognition schedules ship.
Pick Puzzle if you sell annual or multi-year contracts through Stripe and need deferred revenue on the books now, you want burn and runway without a spreadsheet, or you expect to hand the monthly close to a bookkeeper and want the price in writing. Budget for Complete, at $120 a month, once you have annual contracts.
If you are between the two, count your annual prepaid contracts. With none, Digits Core and Puzzle Core differ by $28 a month billed monthly, and the rest of the features decide it. With several, revenue recognition decides it until Digits ships its schedules.
Where LedgerIt fits
LedgerIt is accounting software for US Delaware C-corps backed by venture capital, starting as early as pre-seed. It connects Mercury, Brex and Ramp, posts Stripe as a subledger and payroll from Gusto and Deel, keeps deferred revenue on schedules, issues invoices, runs a month-end close with a checklist and locked periods, and has a public API on every plan and an MCP server. It is priced by monthly spend, and free up to $20,000 a month of spend. See LedgerIt.
Do not use LedgerIt if you need bill pay, department tracking or runway reporting today: all three are on the roadmap, not live. It is also the wrong fit if you want a firm to keep your books and file your taxes as part of the subscription, because LedgerIt is not a CPA firm and does not prepare tax returns.
What to do before you pay for either
- Count your contracts paid annually or up front. If you have any, ask each vendor to show you a deferred revenue schedule built from your Stripe data.
- List what you need on day one: bill pay, invoicing, departments, burn and runway, an API. Price the lowest plan on each side that has all of them.
- Compare like with like. Digits shows monthly prices; Puzzle's are 20% lower billed yearly.
- Decide who closes the books. If it is an outside bookkeeper, ask which product they work in, and price Puzzle's service tier against their fee.
- Use the free period. Run one real month through the trial, from bank feed to statements, before you commit.
- Before you switch, export a trial balance from your current books so the new ledger's opening balances can be checked.
